Tulip Tips
Apr 4, 2012 8:00 AM
You know spring has sprung when these beauties start popping up. Set your table with love – perfect love that is. Tulips signify “perfect love”, and each color expresses a unique meaning. Yellow tulips symbolize cheerful thoughts, white expresses forgiveness, purple represents royalty, and red says, “Believe me.”
Tip: Re-cut the stems of your tulips when you get them home to keep them fresh longer. Cut the stems diagonally, removing about one-half inch. Tulips continue growing after being cut, up to an inch, and will conform to the shape of the container, so keep this in mind when choosing your vase.

Naturally Dyed Easter Eggs
Apr 4, 2012 8:00 AM

It was quite amazing to see some of the vibrant colors we were able to create with some of our favorite foods. We discovered when mixing up some of our ‘potions’ we got colors we would have never imagined; i.e. purple cabbage boiled for a brief time results in a great green dye (just don’t add vinegar to it or it will turn red)! Can you guess what foods we used to get these colors?

Sweet Potato? Yam? Which Is Which, and Which Do I Want?
Oct 28, 2011 3:12 PM
People ask me this question all the time: Which one is a sweet potato, which is a yam, and which one do I want? The answer, however, is not particularly simple. In American grocery stores, you typically find both “yams” and “sweet potatoes.” However, despite the labels, most of the time both are really sweet potatoes. The real “true yam,” popular in the Caribbean, is rarely seen in the US.

Fresh Herbs: Are You Going to Scarborough Fair?
Oct 28, 2011 2:25 PM
Though they’re available year-round, fresh herbs really become essential for the holidays. These often overlooked produce items pack quite a punch of flavor for a low price.
Almost any dish can be tweaked with these little gems of greenery: from meats to sauces, veggies and even baked goods. Try slipping stems of fresh sage, rosemary and thyme under the skin of your holiday turkey before cooking. Rosemary and fresh chives can add some zing to mashed potatoes, and chopped chives also can be tossed into a classic green bean casserole. And don’t forget about the gravy; try infusing it with delicious flavors of fresh sage, rosemary and thyme. • Adam Bazarnik, Produce
