Be on the lookout for local, organically grown spring onions, which crop up in our produce department this time of year. Several local farms will be up to their elbows in them soon: Terra Firma and Full Belly farms are two of our favorite growers of red and white spring onions in Yolo County. Spring onions are essentially immature onions that haven’t fully developed.
It doesn’t get much more romantic than beer, unless of course you throw chocolate in the mix! This USDA organic beer brewed locally in Berkeley, CA is medium bodied with rich cocoa and roasted malt aromas and dark chocolate and espresso flavors.

Dinner was served! Last Saturday, our chef team, led by Nugget Markets Executive Chef Stazi Dulman, created a meal featuring local products for the Dinner on the Farm fundraiser, benefiting the Center for Land Based Learning and its programs designed to educate youth on everything related to local agriculture.
Nugget Markets’ produce managers and buyers just got back from a fun-filled trip to visit our friends at Full Belly Farm in the Capay Valley. While on our visit, we learned all about the 300-acre farm that has been growing organically for more than 28 years. Fully Belly Farm is family owned and operated, and their tender love and care shows in their delicious products. Dru Rivers, one of the founders of the farm, shared their passion for not only growing food, but also growing farmers. While the concept sounded a bit strange at first, Dru explained that Fully Belly Farm offers an internship to students who are interested in starting their own farms. Full Belly’s internship program has grown more than 100 farmers, resulting in more than 100 new organic farms across our country.
My how they’ve grown! Our produce specialists just took another trip to Terra Firma Farm in Winters to follow up on their heirloom tomatoes’ progress after being transplanted. Paul with Terra Firma is excited about their progress and we’re thrilled to see the tomatoes doing so well! We look forward to carrying Terra Firma’s incredibly juicy heirloom tomatoes this season!
Many thanks to all the wonderful guests who joined us for a day of all things local. Guests in Roseville mingled with local producers and sampled foods produced within 100 miles of our home offices in Woodland. If you missed out on this great event, join us this Saturday in El Dorado Hills from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Paul Holmes began farming a few acres in Winters in the late 1980s. Today this 200-acre farm, co-owned by Paul Holmes, Hector Melendez-Lopez and Paul Underhill produces more than 100 crops each year, including spring, summer and winter vegetables, as well as stone fruit, citrus and nuts.
