A Beverage for the Season: Egg Nog
At your next holiday party or family gathering, ask if anyone knows where the term Egg Nog came from. Unless you have a “know-it-all” uncle, I would bet that no one will offer an answer.

Ready to blow away your family with a super quick and easy holiday treat? This simple but decadent dessert is a sure-fire hit!
In every jar of Fior di Frutta’s line of 100 percent organic fruit spreads, you’ll find the product of more than three pounds of organic fruit and no added sugar. Fior di Frutta processes their fruits at low temperatures to preser ve all the vitamins and nutrients, making this yummy spread quite healthy — and also irresistible! The newest addition to the fam ily group is a pink grapefruit spread, but the strawberry and cherry spreads are classics.
This Italian sweet bread is super soft and fluffy, with delicious bits of candied orange and raisins throughout. Eat it for breakfast with some mascarpone cheese or use it to make sweet French toast! You can even try it for dessert with some marsala wine — but if you do, remember to cin-cin (say “cheers” to) the people of Milan who created this delicious treat! • Stephanie Stille, Specialty & Ethnic Foods
This holiday season, Mission Tortilla Chips will add a sugar & cinnamon chip to its line up. This seasonal flavor is available for a limited time only, so be sure to get them while you can.
People ask me this question all the time: Which one is a sweet potato, which is a yam, and which one do I want? The answer, however, is not particularly simple. In American grocery stores, you typically find both “yams” and “sweet potatoes.” However, despite the labels, most of the time both are really sweet potatoes. The real “true yam,” popular in the Caribbean, is rarely seen in the US.
If you’re like me, French fries are merely the delivery vehicle for ketchup — and boy do I love ketchup! Well, the same is true for crackers and bread — I only eat them with cheese because picking it up with my hands can get quite messy (well that and after I’ve licked my hands clean from the first bite, my friends usually frown upon me digging back in again).
Every year around the holidays, baked Brie becomes the talk of the town. But to be honest, until I tried this recipe I was ready to kick it to the curb.
The oozy, garlicky, salty creaminess made me wish I’d dipped in a larger chunk of bread, or at least made a double batch. But you don’t have to take my word for it — make it yourself! We’ve even got all the ingredients you need, no hard work required.
The weather outside might be frightful, but our Coffee Bars are full of delightful holiday drinks! Warm up with a spicy Apple Cider or a Fireplace Mocha (our rich hot chocolate kissed with peppermint). Try some of our classic offerings with a festive twist, like a Candy Cane Mocha or a Pumpkin Latte.
If you can’t get enough of the cold, we also offer seasonal milkshakes and freezes. Add a little pumpkin, peppermint, gingerbread or eggnog to your drink to get yourself in the holiday spirit! • Karisa Asato, Coffee Bar
Have you ever heard the saying “A slice of pie without the cheese is like a kiss without the squeeze” and wonder, are they serious? Us too! Well it turns out that this came from a tradition that originated in England back before apples were sweet (apparently all apples used to be tart — go figure).
