At Nugget Markets, we strive to improve every day. Part of that means we want to help protect the environment. Throughout our company, our awesome team of Green Gurus continually works to make sure we are truly maximizing our sustainability practices, including by reducing water consumption, recycling, food waste diversion to fuel or fertilizers, and energy reduction.

We’re coming up on rainy season (fingers crossed!), but the drought’s not over yet. In keeping with our pledge, Nugget Markets is continuing to take strides to reduce our water usage by 12,000,000 gallons in 2015.
Here’s some food for thought: Nugget Markets and UC Davis are teaming up to help reduce food waste and provide college students with fresh fruits and vegetables as part of a nutritious diet. With the “Fruit and Veggie Up” program, students are able to receive fresh produce for free, right on campus at the Student Health and Wellness Center!
At Nugget Markets, sustainability matters! During 2014 we diverted 4.8 million pounds of recyclables and reduced water consumption by more than 75%. This year we’re upping the ante. Our sustainability coordinator tells all in this video.
While we’re all hoping that a strong “El Niño” winter will help end the current drought situation, in the heat of the summer it’s more important than ever that we all do our part to reduce our water use. We thought we should share with our guests some of the ways Nugget Markets has taken on the challenge of reducing our water consumption to conserve this precious resource.
Motivated to prevent exposure of harmful chemicals and plastics to infants, Lifefactory launched health-conscious and safe baby bottles in 2007. Since then, Lifefactory has expanded its product line to include a variety of bottles and glassware.
At Nugget we love to celebrate Earth Day 365 days a year. And we are committed to constantly improving the impact we make on the environment. Over the last year we have focused on reducing our water and energy usage as well as our waste creation.
What impact did our efforts make last year?
We diverted over 5.5 million pounds of waste from the landfill.
Our water usage was reduced by 75% which led us save 3.8 million gallons of water.
We added energy-efficient LED lighting as well as energy efficient cooler cases with glass doors to a handful of our stores.
Enjoy organic recycling made easy with the Compost Pail. This one gallon stainless steel pail holds several days’ worth of kitchen food waste. It’s the perfect holder for storing scraps from the kitchen that haven’t yet made it outside to the main compost bin. This polished pail even has two charcoal filters in the vented lid to ensure an odor free environment.
From Mason jars, to containers, to cloth bags, repurposing items keeps Mother Earth in a good mood! We've got our reuseable bags for purchase as we do our part to keep mom happy.
Nugget Markets is onboard the sustainability train, and that includes implementing water-saving procedures in our stores. We have installed hundreds of low-flow aerators on faucets throughout our stores, saving up to 75% of our water use in these areas. We have established practices that minimize the use of water when washing dishes and cleaning. And we are making water use a big part of buying decisions when it comes time to replace equipment and machinery.
