In Nugget Market's deli department, spring ushers in the bounty of the harvest, bringing to our stores lovely seasonal ingredients including artichokes, asparagus, beets, a variety of greens, new potatoes, spinach and strawberries, just to name a few.
Come try the newest addition to our artisan bread baking program: whole–wheat sourdough! These loaves are baked fresh daily in our bakeries, by the artisan bread bakers who work in our stores. We don’t use any preservatives or shelf stabilizers in our whole–wheat sourdough (or in any of our breads), so you can be sure it’s super–fresh, as well as being healthy, made with great whole grains!
Be on the lookout for local, organically grown spring onions, which crop up in our produce department this time of year. Several local farms will be up to their elbows in them soon: Terra Firma and Full Belly farms are two of our favorite growers of red and white spring onions in Yolo County. Spring onions are essentially immature onions that haven’t fully developed.
Asparagus is the ultimate springtime vegetable. Packed with nutrition, asparagus supplies 66 percent of the daily recommended dose of folic acid in just one cup. But there’s more: Asparagus is also packed with vitamins C, E and A, and vitamins B1, B2, B3 and B6, along with dietary fiber, iron, manganese, copper, and phosphorous.

It's Heart Health Month, and we partnered with the American Heart Association and Sacramento's Go Red for Women for the 2013 Children's Heart Art Challenge art contest, sponsored locally by Nugget Markets and designed to share heart-health awareness in a fun, creative way. This year, local 4th and 5th grade classes at schools near each Nugget Market location were invited to take the challenge, and here are our winners in each category!
