Extraordinary Sustainability: Feeding Our Communities

Being in the food business, it’s incredibly important to us at Nugget Markets that our guests and communities are getting the food they need. No matter if you’re a guest in our stores or a community member seeking help from a food bank, we care deeply about the service we provide and the food we offer. That’s why we partner with 14 food agencies and 6 food banks to ensure our excess food is handled safely and feeds the hungry in our communities.

This year, we strengthened our Food Recovery Program in partnership with Feeding America. By writing new guidelines, we strengthened our relationships with local food banks (some of which we’ve been partnering with for almost two decades) and brought on new partners. By expanding the number of food categories we donate, we’re also able to provide more nutritious foods in greater quantities to more people in need! By working in local communities with partners like us, Feeding America serves more than 46 million people (of which 25% are seniors and 12.5% are children), or about 4.3 billion meals annually.
As part of our dedication to sustainability and social responsibility, we’re also thrilled to celebrate World Food Day on October 16. This international event is dedicated to making healthy diets available to everyone. In fact, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations recognizes October as the month dedicated to raising awareness and ending world hunger.
In honor of World Food Day, Nugget Markets’ sustainability coordinator and green guru team will be volunteering with our local food banks and agencies! If you’d like to learn about volunteering opportunities with our partners, reach out to your local food bank: Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano County, Placer Food Bank, Redwood Empire Food Bank, Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services or Yolo Food Bank.
