‘Tis the season—for apples, that is! Have fun with a classic autumn treat by making caramel apple wedges with a variety of tasty toppings. Here’s what you’ll need to get started.
Ingredients:
- Organic Granny Smith apples
- Lemon juice
- 12 ounces pre-packed caramel candies (found in our Bulk Department)
- 3 tablespoons butter
Toppings:
- Toasted coconut
- Crushed toffee peanuts
- Granola
- Crushed chocolate-covered pretzels
- Crushed mini M&Ms
- Whatever else sounds tasty!
Tools:
- Apple slicer or knife and cutting board
- Basting brush
- Skewers (same number as apple wedges)
- Double boiler (stainless steel bowl and a pot of water)
Start by cutting your apples into wedges, then baste each wedge lightly with lemon juice and set aside.
Create a double boiler by setting a metal bowl in a pot of water where the water just touches the bottom of the bowl (this will help prevent the caramel from burning). Over medium-low heat, use the double boiler to melt the caramel candies and butter until the caramel makes ribbons when you lift the spoon.
While the caramel is melting, skewer apple wedges in one end to create a handle. Arrange toppings in bowls on a sheet pan (so they don’t spill), or put your toppings in muffin tins for a cute presentation.
Dip skewered apples into melted caramel to cover half the wedge, then quickly dip caramel-coated apple into your chosen toppings. Place finished caramel apple wedges on a parchment-lined sheet pan and put in the refrigerator until set.
And voila—Caramel Apple Wedges!
We recommend the tart, all-purpose Granny Smith for this project, but you can also try varieties like super sweet Fuji, semi-sweet and crisp Gala or slightly tart Honeycrisp. To learn more about these and other apple varieties check out our Apple Rundown, or ask one of our friendly associates in the Produce Department at your local Nugget Markets!
