Check the frozen novelty aisle for a wide array of better-for-you goodies made with real fruit such as fruit bars, sorbets and fruit-yogurt pops. Here are some tips on picking healthful frozen fruit treats along with some benefits of these refreshing goodies.
• Fruit first: Check the ingredient label to look for real fruit like berries, peaches and the like as the first ingredient to ensure you are selecting the real thing– fruit!
• Watch added sugars: Check the Nutrition Facts Panel for added sugar, along with the ingredient list for names like cane sugar, sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup. Compare product and aim for less added sugar keeping in mind every teaspoon equals 4 grams (and your daily allotment should be less than 50 grams of added sugar daily.)
• Keep an eye on calories: Any frozen treat may come with a hefty dose of calories due to added sugar and fat. Most real-fruit treats tip in at less than 120 calories per pop or serving; if the label lists higher calorie counts, scan for a better selection.
• Big on C: Most real-fruit frozen treats supply about 15-25% of the Daily Value for this antioxidant vitamin shown to help support immune system health and healthy skin.
• Potassium plus: Real fruit and fruit juices supply the mineral potassium known for its role in healthy blood pressure regulation.
• Look for fiber: With whole fruit as a main ingredient, each treat should supply a few grams of fiber, typically soluble fiber which helps you feel full and may help keep blood sugar levels under control.
