Can you believe it? September 28 marks Nugget Markets’ 90th Anniversary! Time flies when you’re having fun, and we’ve certainly been doing that. See how it all started back in 1926, how we got to where we are now and some of our major milestones along the way!
1926: Dedicated to offering the freshest produce available, father and son team, Will and Mack Stille, open the very first Nugget Market in Woodland, California.
1946: Nugget Market moves down the street from its original location, expanding its team from 4 to 16 associates! Mack and Will also add a smoke house and meat locker business to the back of the store, using their sharp freeze box for processing meat, berries and fruits before storage.
1960: Embracing new technology to stay competitive, Gene Stille, Mack’s son and Will’s grandson, takes over as president of Nugget Markets.
1973: Nugget Market moves again to its current location at 157 Main Street, growing by 70% and adding new departments like the deli, hot food takeout, fresh seafood, bakery and floral.
1990s: Nugget Markets introduces a fresh, European marketplace feel when Eric Stille, fourth generation, takes the helm as CEO/President. The market also adopts a new focus on associate training and fresh produce deliveries six days a week! Nugget Markets’ first wine stewards, cheese specialists and professional chefs join the team, offering even more local and imported wines and artisan cheeses, and homemade meal solutions.
2000s: New Nugget Markets open in Davis, Vacaville, Sacramento, West Sacramento, Roseville, El Dorado Hills and Elk Grove! We also join the ranks of FORTUNE Magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For.”
2015-2016: Nugget Markets expands into Marin and Sonoma counties, welcoming five new stores to the family. For the 11th consecutive year, Nugget Markets earns a spot on FORTUNE Magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” list, ranking #13 in 2016!
