We picked Trinity’s brain to find out what it means to be a natural athlete and to learn how we can all incorporate more plant products and supplements into our diets to potentially improve athletic performance.

Nugget Markets: What motivated you to begin living the life of a natural athlete?
Trinity Glecker: I was a vegetarian for 12 years, and I wanted to up my game and training by going plant based. Since I ruled out all animal products, I was able to lean out and build muscle, recover faster and feel better overall. The change in diet had such an impact on my life; I am in the best shape of my life. I have really grown an appreciation of where my food comes from and the quality of it.
NM: What does your average day look like?
TG: I am constantly trying to fit everything in with work and training. I make sure to get in a good breakfast to start my work day and grab snacks for the road as I am in the car for three to four hours a day at least. After a long workday, I follow a training schedule of gym, road ride or run. I make it a priority to come home and make meals most of the week, versus going out.
NM: What are your tips for the everyday athlete looking to transition to a plant-based lifestyle?
TG: Make the transition one step at a time to not get too overwhelmed. Pay attention to what you are eating; it is easy to go “junk food vegan,” and the ultimate goal is to focus on whole foods. Get daily inspiration from plant-based bloggers online and listen to my Rich Roll podcast — they can act as a support network, which is essential! Also, make the raw and produce section at the store your focus when you go shopping. Staples I always have in my cupboard at home are beans and quinoa, because they can be used for so many recipes. Finally, think of how the food makes you feel and what are you getting out if it — food should always give you energy!
